What the work involves

Radiators are simple things, which is why their faults are often misread. A cold radiator might have air in it, a stuck valve pin, a closed lockshield, or years of sludge in the bottom. A damp carpet under a radiator can be the valve gland, the tail joint, or a pinhole in the panel itself. Radiator repair starts with working out which, because the fix for each is different and some take minutes.

We handle radiator repairs, replacements and new radiator installations across the city and the towns near Birmingham we cover. If the problem runs through several radiators rather than one, the system may need a power flush rather than new panels, and we will tell you if that is the case.

Common radiator faults and their causes

Most radiator problems fall into a handful of patterns, and the pattern tells us where to look.

  • Cold at the top, warm at the bottom: trapped air. Bleeding usually fixes it, but if it keeps coming back, something is drawing air in or producing gas through corrosion.
  • Warm at the top, cold at the bottom: sludge settled in the lower channels.
  • Completely cold, while others are hot: a stuck TRV pin, a closed lockshield, or a blockage in the tails.
  • Cold radiators upstairs only: on open vented systems, often low water in the feed tank or a pump problem.
  • Water on the floor: a leaking valve gland, a tail joint, a bleed valve or a corroded panel.

We check the easy explanations first. There is no point replacing a radiator when turning a lockshield valve would have brought it back to life.

Valve repairs, TRVs and balancing

A lot of radiator repairs are really valve repairs. Each radiator normally has two valves: one controls it (a TRV or a manual wheelhead), the other, the lockshield, sets how much water it receives compared with the rest of the system.

Thermostatic radiator valves

TRV pins often stick after a summer switched off. Sometimes freeing the pin is enough; sometimes the valve body or head needs changing. Replacing an old manual valve with a TRV gives you control room by room.

Leaking valves and balancing

Weeping valve glands can often be repacked or tightened, but corroded valve bodies need replacing, which means draining down at least part of the system. Once valves are sorted, we balance the lockshields so radiators far from the boiler get their share of heat rather than the nearest ones taking it all.

Radiator replacement

Radiator replacement is the right answer when a panel is leaking through corrosion, when rust is showing along the seams, or when an old radiator is simply too small for the room. It is also common when people redecorate and want a different style.

The new radiator should be chosen by heat output, not just by size. We work out what the room needs, taking into account the walls, windows and how the room is used, then find a radiator that delivers it in the space available. A single panel may be swapped for a double panel convector of the same width to give more heat without taking up more wall.

  • Matching pipe centres where possible to avoid moving pipework.
  • New valves fitted with the radiator, rather than reusing tired old ones.
  • The system drained, refilled and dosed with inhibitor afterwards.
  • Bleeding and balancing once the new radiator is running.

Moving radiators and fitting new ones

Radiator installation is often part of changing a room: knocking through, fitting a kitchen, or adding an extension. Moving a radiator means extending or rerouting the flow and return pipes, usually under the floor.

In Victorian and Edwardian houses with suspended timber floors, such as many in Bournville and older parts of Kings Norton, pipework can usually run under the boards with minimal disruption. Solid floors are harder: pipes may need to come down from above, run along skirting, or be chased into the wall. In converted warehouse and loft apartments around the Jewellery Quarter, exposed pipework is sometimes left on show deliberately.

When adding radiators, we check the boiler has capacity for the extra load and that the pipework feeding that area is big enough. A radiator on the end of a long, narrow pipe run may never heat properly, however big it is.

Radiator styles and towel rails

Radiator fitting is not only about panels under windows. We fit most of the common types:

  • Panel and convector radiators: single, double and triple, the standard choice for most rooms.
  • Column radiators: steel or cast iron style, suited to period homes but heavy, so wall fixings matter.
  • Vertical radiators: for rooms where wall space under windows is limited.
  • Heated towel rails: plumbed into the heating, or dual fuel with an electric element so they work in summer.

Column and designer radiators often give less heat for their size than a plain double panel. That is fine if you size them correctly, but it is a common reason for new radiators leaving rooms colder than before. We check the heat output figures before you buy, so the style you like still keeps the room warm.

When the problem is the whole system

Sometimes one faulty radiator is really a symptom of the wider system. Signs that the issue goes beyond a single radiator:

  • Several radiators cold at the bottom, or black water from every bleed valve.
  • Radiators needing bleeding every few weeks.
  • Pressure on a sealed system dropping without a visible leak.
  • Rooms at the far end of the house never warming up, whatever the valve settings.

In those cases replacing radiators one at a time wastes money. The system may need cleaning, balancing, a new pump, or in some older homes a partial redesign by a central heating engineer. We will tell you when a radiator repair is the fix, and when it is only treating a symptom.

How it works

How a radiator job is done

Whether it is one valve or several new radiators, the steps are much the same.

  1. Reading the job through before the visit
    01

    Find the real fault

We check for air, stuck pins, closed lockshields, sludge and leaks, and look at the rest of the system to see whether the problem is one radiator or several.

  2. Finding the stopcock and meter before work starts
    02

    Size and agree

For replacements or new radiators, we work out the heat output the room needs, confirm the style and position with you, and agree the price before starting.

  3. Drilling a wall for a pipe fixing
    03

    Drain and fit

We drain down as much of the system as the job needs, protect the floor, fit the new valves or radiator, and reconnect with fresh joints.

  4. A finished boiler and cylinder installation
    04

    Refill and balance

The system is refilled, dosed with inhibitor, bled and repressurised. We balance the radiators and check every joint for leaks once the heating is up to temperature.

Questions

Radiator Repair and Replacement: questions people ask

Radiator Repair and Replacement
Why does my radiator need bleeding so often?

Occasional bleeding is normal, but needing to do it every few weeks suggests something else is going on. Corrosion inside the system produces hydrogen gas, which collects like air. On open vented systems, a pump pushing water over the vent pipe can draw air in. Both are worth fixing properly, as repeated bleeding and refilling adds more oxygen and speeds up corrosion.

Can I replace a radiator without draining the whole system?

Often, yes. If both valves close fully, the radiator can be isolated, drained into a tray and removed with only a little water lost. If the valves are old or leaking, or the new radiator needs new valves, we will usually drain down the system, or part of it, to fit them properly.

My new radiator is bigger but the room is colder. Why?

Size and heat output are not the same. Many column and designer radiators give less heat than a standard double panel of the same size. The pipework feeding it, the valve settings and how the system is balanced also matter. We check the output figures and system flow when this happens.

Is a leaking radiator an emergency?

A slow weep from a valve can usually wait a little, with a towel or tray underneath. A steady drip or a corroded panel can get worse quickly. Close both valves on the radiator to isolate it, which normally stops the leak. If the boiler pressure keeps dropping on a sealed system, switch the boiler off until it is repaired.

Can a towel rail run in summer when the heating is off?

A standard towel rail plumbed into the heating only gets warm when the heating is on. A dual fuel rail has an electric element as well, so it can be switched on independently in summer. The electrical connection needs to be done safely and to the wiring regulations, especially in a bathroom.

Do I need new valves when I replace a radiator?

It is usually sensible. Old valves often seize, leak at the gland, or do not line up with the new radiator's tails. Fitting new thermostatic valves at the same time also gives you proper room control. The extra work is small compared with coming back to replace a failing valve later.
